Colonsay IPA

colonsay_ipaErin and I had the pleasure of visiting Colonsay, a small island of the west coast of Scotland, in August 2008.  The island is proud of it’s 100 inhabitants, one hotel, a general store and a brewery.  The island has a wonderful rustic beauty, as can be seen via my photos page, but it is quite a harsh environment – if the ferry doesn’t get in, you’ll struggle to get your milk at the shop!

Which makes a brewery, and such a sucessful microbrewery at that, a real feat of endurance!  While the brewery does have a shop open most days for a few hours at least, Colonsay isn’t the easiest place to pop to in order to pick up your off-sales – so it’s just as well Peckhams source this fine beer for you.  I picked this example up at the South Clark Street branch in Edinburgh.  They had the full range there, with both the 80/- and Lager well stocked.

My favourite however is the IPA: it has a fine hop flavour and also a suprising citrus flavour – who would have thought to find citrus flavour in a beer from such a desolate (but in a good way) place as Colonsay?  Truly amazing – and well worth the premium price tag as a treat after a hard day at the office!

Pentland IPA

pentland_ipaAs part of the aforementioned Hogmanay celebrations, I had bought a mini cask of Pentland IPA direct from the Stewart Brewery in Loanhead and Andy and I made a decent effort at getting to the bottom of it on the night.  However, we failed – which meant I got an extra cheeky pint early in the new year.  Winner!

Holy Gr’ale’

holy_graleHoly Gr’ale is specifically brewed by Stewart Brewing for one of Edinburgh’s finest real ale hostelries, Cloisters.  Set in a former manse, Cloister’s is renowned for an ever-changing selection of ales – and a wide range of whisky – but this beer is almost guaranteed to be available.  I like all of Stewart’s stuff, and this is no exception.  Very tasty – and yet another reason to visit this pub again!

Tip: visit this pub in the winter when it’s bitterly cold outside – the roaring open fire and pleasing lack of booming sound system make this pub an ideal retreat!
